Rik “Lucky” Lane came into this world on June 6, 1951, to parents Mary and Richard Lane. Growing up in Ontario, California, he then moved to Ouray in the late 1980s to build and manage his family’s rentals and create a life of adventure riding his beloved motorcycles near and far.
Sadly, he lost his valiantly fought battle to cancer and now as he would say, is “riding with the Angels.”
Rik was a man who could do anything. He could fix what was broken, build what was needed, and tackle just about any challenge with grit and determination. He liked to say he was a jack of all trades and master of none, but those who saw the quality of his work knew otherwise. His standards for himself were high, and he expected the same from others.
He carried stories with him – of people he met, roads he traveled, and adventures that defined his life. Friends will smile remembering the stories and photos he shared about how he taught his beloved Samoyed, Niki, to ride on his motorcycle, perched proudly on the gas tank. Rik’s life was full of character, mischief, loyalty and unforgettable moments.
Whether you met him on the road, in the garage, or at the edge of a gathering, Rik left an impression. His passing leaves a space that can never be filled, but his spirit – gregarious, resourceful, and fiercely his own – will live on in the stories we tell and memories we keep.
Rik was preceded in death by his sister, Carol; his father, Dick; and his brother, Randy. He is survived by his mother, Mary, two nephews and one niece. A memorial will be held at a later date.
