Dear Editor:
On behalf of the Ouray County Coroner’s Office, I want to express our sincere gratitude to this community for stepping up when it mattered most.
Over the past few weeks, our office managed a sensitive case involving a decedent whose friends or loved ones had not yet been located to make final disposition decisions consistent with his wishes. As part of our due diligence, we reached out locally, regionally and to communities in another state where he had previously lived. What happened next speaks volumes about the character of Ouray County.
The Ouray County Plaindealer played a crucial role in disseminating the information swiftly and respectfully. Cedar Hill Cemetery graciously offered to assist with a burial plot if necessary. Crippin Funeral Home worked directly with a loved one to help make arrangements that were both affordable and dignified. Numerous citizens came forward with information, shared the story widely and offered their assistance.
Most importantly, due to the community’s engagement and attention, a lifelong friend saw the notice and came forward to claim him. As a result, this individual will be laid to rest in a place that held personal meaning to him, rather than in a government burial. That outcome matters. Every person deserves dignity in death and the opportunity for those who care about them to say goodbye properly.
While many generous offers of financial assistance were made, our primary goal was never about cost. It was about finding someone who knew him, who could honor his wishes and who could ensure he was not laid to rest alone or forgotten. The willingness of so many to step forward without hesitation reminds us why this community is special.
In emergency services and public office, we often see people at their worst moments. But in situations like this, we also see people at their best. Ouray County once again proved that when someone is in need we show up.
