Season of Sharing: George Gardner Scholarship Fund
A raft full of Ridgway High School seniors enjoy a calm section of the Colorado River before entering the chaotic whitewater of Cataract Canyon in September 2023. Season of Sharing: George Gardner Scholarship Fund

Year established as a nonprofit: 2008

What does your organization do for Ouray County?

The George Gardner Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Ouray County youth to pursue outdoor or experiential educational opportunities. We believe that profound learning often happens during time spent in the mountains, deserts, rivers and oceans of the world. These experiences provide an arena for leadership development and other lifelong skills.

What was your greatest accomplishment in 2023?

We supported 90 students in activities ranging from ice climbing to whitewater rafting. We also helped finance four students pursuing individual learning opportunities such as avalanche training and wilderness first aid.

What are some of your goals for 2024?

We’d like to get even more kids outside – developing courage, confidence and compassion.

How can people help?

The community can help by visiting georgefund.org to make a tax-deductible donation. This nonprofit is also participating in Colorado Gives Day on Dec. 5 with many other nonprofits here in Ouray County, where donations can be made at coloradogives.org.

Thank you to Lois Ziemann for providing this information.
