John was born in Houston, Texas, as a fifth-generation Texan. He was always “Big John” in every aspect of life: Boy Scouts, high school football, thespians, guest ranch cowboy, ROTC and the U.S. Marines.
He began his career in the U.S. Marines and went on to become a fireman in Houston. He met his wife, Glenda White, while working as an EMT in Houston. They were married in 1984.
They moved to Ridgway, CO, in 1999. He had two children, a daughter Lindsey and a son, John Henry. He also had two granddaughters, Brooke and Riley. His wife and family were the love of his life.
He served his community in many aspects: president of FORS (Friends of Ridgway State Park); vice president of OCRA (Ouray County Rodeo Association), volunteer at the Ridgway Visitors Center, volunteer on the Ridgway Fire Department and grand marshal of the Ouray County Rodeo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Bob and both of his children.
The community will miss him.
“Big John” had a life well lived. There will be a celebration of life for John on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at the Ute Indian Museum, 17253 Chipeta Road, Montrose, Colorado, from 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm. All are welcome.
