Barry Pomeroy Merkel

June 12, 1952 – October 18, 2026

Barry Pomeroy Merkel, age 74, of Ridgway, CO, died October 18, 2026, at his home. Barry was born June 12, 1952, in Cleveland, OH, to William Russell and Joan (Christian) Merkel. He graduated from Orange High School in Pepper Pike, OH, and attended Wittenberg University for several terms before beginning his long career as a craftsman and carpenter.

He moved to Colorado from Texas in 1978. He remained a Coloradan the rest of his life, starting in Aspen, then Carbondale, and then the Denver area. He moved to Ouray County in 2000. Barry built his home in Ridgway and moved in in 2005.

Barry was a gifted carpenter and builder. He was part of various crews constructing quality custom homes. He was particularly skilled in finish work and cabinetmaking. He donated his talents and time as well. Some of his finest contributions can be found at the Sherbino Theater in Ridgway.

He loved hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing, mushroom gathering, and being in nature. He was an avid music fan. It began in his early teens and he loved rock, blues, country, and bluegrass music. From live performances to recordings and biographies, he loved them all. His passion for music took him deep into the roots of many genres. He also played the guitar and mandolin, dabbled in songwriting, and occasionally performed at open mike nights in the area.

He is survived by his brother Lee (Marla) Merkel, sisters Christy (Jon) Rockhold and Wendy (Bruce) Kelsh, and seven nieces and nephews.

Barry’s ashes will be spread at Owl Creek Pass, according to his wishes, where he will rest among the mushrooms he loved.
