Alec Lindeman wasn’t planning to run for the Colorado House of Representatives this year. Neither was Susannah Smith, a Ridgway resident who volunteered to be a placeholder candidate in the Democratic primary for House District 58 until someone else could be found to replace her. Lindeman, a Mt. Crested Butte town councilor, heard about the situation and, after some thought, decided to go for it. “This was always on my radar, but it was not something that I was actively pursuing,” Lindeman said. After a couple of months of campaigning, Lindeman was stumping at the Ridgway Farmers’ Market Sept. 4 when he learned the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office never received his paperwork, nor had they received Smith’s withdrawal. A few hours later the office accepted Smith’s resignation, but Lindeman learned the deadline for his paperwork had long passed.
