Ridgway, Ouray basketball head to state playoffs
In view of a dejected Telluride player (right), Ridgway freshman Sam Kinne (1) is carried off Hill Court by teammates after making an improbable, buzzer-beating two-pointer to defeat the visiting Miners 50-49 on Feb. 24. The Demons concluded 3A/2A/1A San Juan Basin League play — and regular-season action in general — on Feb. 27 with a 68-39 win at Dove Creek, improving Ridgway’s record to 9-12 overall (5-7 SJBL) and earning the squad a spot in the Class 2A state championship opening round game. Seeded 32nd, Ridgway will travel on Friday, March 6, to top-seeded Sanford (21-1) for a 5:30 p.m. start. Photo by Joel Priest | Ouray County Plaindealer

Ouray senior Keaton Nelson (13) leaps for a close-range shot over Telluride’s Langston Silbergeld (14) and others during the Trojans’ 56-52 victory on Feb. 28 in Telluride. Sitting in second place in the 3A/2A/1A San Juan Basin League with an 8-4 record, Ouray (14-8 overall) will face De Beque at 2 p.m. Friday, March 6, in the Class 1A state championship opening Round of 32 in Nucla. Ouray is the No. 18 seed entering the Nucla-hosted, four-team 1A-Region II event. De Beque is the No. 15 seed. Second-seeded Nucla will face 31-seed Kit Carson at 6 p.m. Friday. The winners of those two games will play Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Photo by Joel Priest/Special to the Plaindealer
