Sometimes audiences need a whimsical, light performance.
And that’s what folks can expect from UpstART Theater’s next play, “Love Song,” timed to lead up to Valentine’s Day.
The all-local cast of performers will present this quirky, fun production that director Kate Kissingford hopes audiences experience as a lighthearted alternative to some of the more serious, heavy and deep plays that UpstART has a reputation for choosing, including the last production of “An Iliad.”
“We had so many folks reach out to us to let us know how much it had impacted them,” Kissingford said in a press release. “At the same time, we realize these are heavy times in which a good balance of comedy and drama is essential.”
The selection of John Kolvenbach’s play is intentional – the theater company produced his play, “Fabuloso” in 2019 and Kissingford said they loved his writing and his “unique, absurdist voice.”
The offbeat “Jungian comedy” includes a cast of characters, an eccentric man named Beane, his well-meaning sister, Joan, and a mysterious love interest for Beane named Molly. The play has been described as “a rhapsody to the power of love in all its forms.”
The Chicago Sun-Times said “Love Song” as “about nothing less than the chaos of being human, and the yearning for everything.”
The characters will be played by an all-local cast, including Heather Toth, Colin Sullivan, Andrea Sokolowski, Josef Mayfield and Alissa Ahlberg.
“Love Song” opens on Friday night and has four shows through Monday at the Wright Opera House in Ouray. For more information on tickets and show times, call 970-325-4399 or visit thewrightoperahouse.org.
