A single vehicle rollover accident involving a truck and a trailer has shut down U.S. Highway 550 at mile marker 114, near Billy Creek State Wildllife Area north of Ridgway. Both lanes of the highway were closed due to not only the accident, but also a vehicle fire.
According to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Hunter Mathews, initial reports indicate a fluid was leaking from the vehicle, which ignited. The truck was fully engulfed in flames, and the trailer also caught fire.
The State Patrol said the accident was reported at 6:48 p.m. It’s unclear when the highway will reopen. Details are limited at this time.
The alternate route traveling around the closure is on County Road 1, over Log Hill Mesa, which comes back to the highway at Colona.
