This is an important update on the state of the big, ugly bill that was passed last week by a 218-214 margin in the House of Representatives. Yes, our 3rd Congressional District representative, Jeff Hurd, voted for it. He had said that he was opposed to cuts to Medicaid and SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) because one-third of his constituents relied on this support. Well, I guess they do not matter that much to him. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicts that this bill will increase the deficit over 10 years by $3.4 trillion and will cost in interest payments $1 trillion per year. And then there are the attacks on immigrants, who make up 4-5% of the U.S. population but 15-20% of the workforce in agriculture, food industry and construction, according to historian Heather Cox Richardson. If you are in the top 1-10% of incomes in the U.S., you might not be affected by this bill (except for your tax cuts), but for the rest of us, this is a devastating new law.
