MURAL IN BLOOM

MURAL IN BLOOM

Artist Yulia Avgustinovich works on the mural she was commissioned to paint on the southeast side of the Space to Create building in Ridgway on Monday.

Avgustinovich, who has been a professional muralist for 20 years and lives in Maryland, was chosen from 17 applicants to complete the artwork. Her design incorporates local flowers, elements that hint at the area history and culture — including cows and fields of hay — as well as rivers and mountains, all painted in a bright color palette with exterior acrylic paint.

The total project cost is $25,000, funded with a grant from the Western Colorado Community Foundation and the town’s FUSE Creative Main Street program, with a grant from the state.

Avgustinovich said she expects to finish the piece before June 20, when a celebration is planned. The public is invited to meet her and participate in an ice cream social and sidewalk art party from 4:30-6 p.m. at the mural location, 675 Clinton St.
