Fishing returns to the big screen this weekend in Ridgway with the Fly Fishing Film Tour at the Ouray County 4-H Event Center.
Organizers hope to stoke the excitement for the upcoming fly fishing season in a region known as an angler’s mecca, as well as support a good cause.
This year’s selections have plenty of options for those who like action- packed fishing footage (trophy Peacock bass fishing in Brazil, just to name one), balanced by other films offering deep storytelling and nostalgia.
One of those films is “Pop’s Flies” by filmmaker Clay Hervey, which tells the story of a man who receives his great-grandfather’s notebook with more than 100 hand-drawn fly patterns and instructions on how to tie them. The film tells a story of how the heirloom family treasure leads the man and his relatives to follow threads connecting them to past generations.
This is the eighth year RIGS Fly Shop & Guide Service has sponsored the film festival, which serves as a major fundraiser for the Uncompahgre Watershed Partnership. All of the proceeds go toward the nonprofit’s work in the watershed to promote education, help preserve the watershed and conduct a variety of stewardship activities.
The festival is on Saturday at the Ouray County 4-H Center and includes food, drinks and door prizes. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and films start at 6:30 p.m. Pre-purchased tickets online are $25, tickets at the door are $30. Visit uncompahgrewatershed. org for more information.
