Season of Sharing: Second Chance Humane Society

Year established as a nonprofit: 1994

What does your organization do for Ouray County?

Second Chance Humane Society speaks on behalf of animals in Ouray, Montrose and San Miguel counties. We accept stray and owner-surrendered dogs and cats and find new homes for over 99% of them.

What do you list as your greatest accomplishments in 2023?

In spite of record-high numbers of stray and owner-surrendered animals coming to our shelter, we had a record-breaking year in finding them new homes! Over 99% of the animals we received have found their forever home through our Ridgway animal shelter.

What are some goals or projects you have planned for 2024?

We plan to expand our community veterinary medical program throughout our tri-county area. We will do this in partnership and cooperation with area veterinarians and local humane organizations as well as through our clinic in Ridgway.

Tell us how the community can help you do more here in Ouray County.

While we are always in need of financial donations (see our website at www. secondchancehumane.org) we also are in need of foster homes for dogs and cats, adopters and people willing to provide our thrift stores in Ridgway and Telluride with good quality, lightly-used items that we can put back into use in our communities.

Thank you to Nicholas Gilman for providing this information.
