Ice climber Jonathan Zaugg of Ridgway celebrates after finishing the speed climbing competition on Sunday in the Scottish Gullies section of the Ouray Ice Park. Zaugg, 22, started competing in 2017 after learning to ice climb when he was 10 years old, and started climbing during the kids competitions at the ice festival. A crowd of spectators erupted in cheers as Tyler Kempney hung upside down from a wooden box dangling over the Uncompahgre Gorge.
They filled the Ouray Ice Park’s lower bridge and lined the opposite side of the gorge, watching and encouraging Kempney as searched for a way to reach the final hold to finish the Mighty Aphrodite route.
