PEAK PERFORMANCE
Yankee Boy Basin’s wildflowers are hitting their peak after a dry spell and some nourishing rains. In the foreground of this photo on the left, the flower stalk is Green Gentian, also called monument plant or elk weed. These tall wildflowers are known for growing as short plants for 20 to 80 years and then shooting up, blooming once before they die. An average stalk includes 600 flowers and can produce 66,600 seeds. Erin McIntyre — Ouray County Plaindealer
