December 17,1970 – Mrs. Evelyn Bates, Ouray school instructor, has won honorable mention as a Colorado Teacher of the Year for 1971. Mrs. Bates was born in Ouray and raised here. She graduated from Ouray High School in 1925 and then entered Western State College, obtaining her degree in 1929.
