An accident late last week resulted in the death of a Ouray resident and serious injuries for a Telluride resident. The deceased was identified as Gemma Mattivi, the mother of Ouray County Sheriff Junior Mattivi. She was 89 years old.
The collision occurred Jan. 18 around 3:13 p.m. on US 550. According to the Colorado State Patrol, 67-year-old Irene Mattivi, the driver of the westbound vehicle, drifted into the other lane and oncoming traffic. Despite attempting to swerve out of the way, Mattivi's vehicle hit 57-year-old Mark Gelbbaugh's car. The Telluride resident sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash.
Trooper Josh Lewis, CSP public information officer, said no drugs or alcohol are suspected to be involved.
