Ouray: Volunteers needed to get muddy

By Sheridan Block

Mud season is just around the corner, and while some may wince at the gooey mess that awaits, Ouray County residents will be celebrating the muck at the Second Annual Mud Fest.
Ouray Chamber Resort Association President Tamara Gulde said that compared to last year’s event, things will be “much, much bigger” this year.
“We’re adding some things that are pretty exciting,” she said. “We promise bigger and better.”

In order to make sure this year’s mud party is even more successful than the last, OCRA is looking for volunteers to help out throughout the weekend. Last year, Mud Fest was made possible with the help of nearly 120 volunteers. However, since this year’s event will span two whole days, the committee is looking for up to 350 volunteers, and that’s not including the 4x4 help.
“I know that volunteer number seems really huge but they’re short shifts and we make it fun,” said OCRA Operations Director Kat Papenbrock. “Volunteers (last year) took ownership of it and that’s what this whole event runs on.”
Volunteers can be expected to do a variety of things including: event set up, selling tickets for the Jeep raffle, registering runners for the 5k and coordinating family activities, among other responsibilities.
Aside from the souvenir mud, volunteers will also receive a volunteer t-shirt as well as free entry to the event for the day they sign up.

Mud Fest will be held at the Ouray County Fairgrounds on Apr. 26-28.
