Jim Loya couldn't have known it, but the timing of his love of Ouray and his support of law enforcement was impeccable.
Before he died, the longtime visitor to the area asked that some of his money be given to the Ouray Police Department. So on May 31, a family friend walked into city hall with a credit card number and a generous donation. His legacy will allow the department to purchase seven new body cameras.
"It was actually a big blessing," interim Police Chief Gary Ray said.
The donation, totaling more than $5,000, will allow the police department to make permanent a body camera trial period that was close to expiring.
"We were having a hard time getting the financing for them," Ray said. "We were actually trying to get grants and donations."
