Black Bear Pass closed due to rescue operation

UPDATE: A rescue operation near Telluride has become a recovery, as two people are reportedly deceased after a private plane crashed in the area of Black Bear Pass.

Black Bear Pass is closed until further notice while authorities conduct a rescue operation near Telluride this afternoon.

San Miguel County sheriff's spokeswoman Susan Lilly declined to discuss the type of rescue. She also refused to release further information.

When asked if there was a plane crash, she refused to say and referred the Plaindealer to her posts on social media, which only indicate that "high altitude, low level helicopter rescue operations are underway" in the Telluride area.

The office later posted it involves a report of a "downed, private aircraft" east of Telluride.

Sheriff's officials have prohibited drone flying in the Telluride area until further notice.
