Marjane Trehal, age 65, of Colona, CO passed away peacefully while visiting her step-daughter in Colorado Springs on November 21, 2018.
Marjane, also known as Jay by close friends and family, was born in San Diego, CA on September 26, 1953 to Edgar and Marian Hotchkiss. She grew up in the small community of Colona, CO on her family’s ranch raising sheep and growing triticale wheat. She had a great love for horses, often riding her Thoroughbred, named Penny, several miles to and from Bible school as well as on the farm. Marjane attended the Uncompahgre Elementary School, and after graduating from the Montrose High School, she became a Master Gardener through the local Colorado State University Extension.
As a life-long resident of Ouray County, Jay was a true “country girl,” known and loved by many. On July 12, 1992, she married Tom Trehal, and they lived happily together for 23 years She was known by many as one of the “Colona Store Girls” as she worked there for many years. She carried her passion for horses throughout her life, often volunteering at local Colorado sanctuaries. She had a “green thumb” that could rival the best as her garden was always impeccably beautiful and full. She appreciated cooking, homemaking, and reading. She excelled at crafting and was an incredible wheat weaver. She loved classic rock, gospel, and Christmas music, enjoyed playing the accordion, and was recently taking guitar lessons. She was a devout Christian and a member of the Colona Community Church. A highlight of her life was visiting Israel, which strengthened her faith and her religious journey.
Marjane was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Trehal; father, Edgar Hotchkiss; and mother, Marian Hotchkiss. She is survived by her brother, Raymond Hotchkiss of Colona; sister, Denise Bailey of Montrose; step daughter, Katy LaSala of Ridgway; step daughter, Amy Barger of Colorado Springs; three grandsons, Cayden Ferguson, Elias Barger, and Killian Barger; as well as numerous other relatives and close friends.
