Controlled burn concerns citizens

by Carolina King

A controlled burn on a piece of land locally referred to as “the dump,” a small mesa just off CO 62 past Ridgway Elementary and before the turnoff on County Road 24A, startled some residents of Ridgway Saturday evening.
Ridgway Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chris Miller told the Plaindealer that WestCO Dispatch confirmed that the fire was planned. He stated the fire was conducted by a local construction company and they had equipment at the site.
Miller was uncertain if the fire was on private land or Bureau of Land Management property that was leased, but he said that Open Burn Permits can be issued to individuals for burns on BLM land.
