Dorothy Jean Mayer

Dorothy J. Mayer, 96, passed away September 26, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Sedona, AZ, with her children at her bedside. She was born September 12, 1922, in Goodland, KS, to William Clarke and Anna Lourene O’Neal Osborne.
Dorothy grew up in Brewster, KS, and graduated from Brewster Schools. She accompanied the high school choir and enjoyed playing trombone and piano with her musical dad at home. Dorothy married Ray H. Mayer, also of Brewster, in 1939, in Goodland, KS, and they were married for 61 years. After graduating from high school, they farmed for many years north of Brewster. Dorothy was a member of the Brewster Methodist Church where she was the Sunday school superintendent, a youth Sunday school teacher, church pianist, taught Vacation Bible School, and was involved in community Thanksgiving dinners. Dorothy was a caretaker, whether it was preparing food for friends and neighbors or for workers on the farm, or setting up camps with the Girl Scouts, Dorothy and Ray moved to Ridgway, CO, in 1980 and later moved to Mesa, AZ.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Ray, her parents, and her sister Marna Williams. She is survived by children Ronn (Joan) Mayer, Parker, CO; Tanya (Paul Friedman) Mayer, Sedona, AZ; Lavon (Jerry) Classi, Montrose, CO; siblings Elroy (Maxine) Osborne, Colorado Springs, CO; Creighton Osborne, Hugo, CO; Velda Jones, Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren Ashley Mayer, Bryan (Christine) Howard, Alouette (Virginia) Mayer, David (Valerie) Howard, Richard (Sandy) Mayer, Ty (Jennifer) Arneson, Tasha (Afshin) Arneson, Dominic Classi and Cortney (Austin) Loyd; 21 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren, plus many nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews.
Her celebration service will be held Sunday, November 11, 1:30 – 4:30 p.m., at the Hilton Garden Inn Majestic Hall, 1810 Briargate Parkway, in Colorado Springs.
