Two proms, double the fun

Dissimilar schedules—especially foreign travel trips for students—prevent the two area high schools from hosting a joint prom and after-prom event this year. In lieu of attending one combined prom, students can attend either or both events.
The OHS prom is Saturday, April 13, at the Brickhouse 737 in Ouray. The RSS prom is Saturday, April 21, at the Sherbino Theater in Ridgway.
An after-prom event will be held after each prom in their respective school gyms, featuring games, food and music. Voyager Youth Services coordinates the events and said that despite the two events this year, they intend to garner enough local support from businesses to host the safe and sober parties from 11:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
“The focus is to keep kids from going to parties where alcohol and other substances are being used,” said Voyager executive director Lisa Thomason. Thomason said that in the past, more students attend the after-prom than the actual prom.
Shannon Robinson, with Ouray County Juvenile Diversion, is coordinating donations to help fund the two events this year. She has set up a Go Fund Me page (search for Safe and Sober Ouray County). Donations also can be arranged by calling Voyager at 970-626-4279 or Robinson at 970-250-5414.
