Ouray Ice Park, Inc.’s board of directors and the City of Ouray have agreed to participate in a formal mediation process to resolve differences related to operation of the Ice Park and the Ice Festival. The mediation is in addition to the work being done by the volunteer, council-appointed Ice Park Sustainability Committee.
On Monday, Sickles provided council a tentative schedule for mediation on March 8 and 9. When times are confirmed, the Plaindealer will report the actual schedule.
Mediator Drew Gorgey of Columbia, Ltd. will be retained at a fee of $3,500 plus travel expenses, according to City Administrator Katie Sickles. Council approved the contract on Jan. 2, with the conditions that the funds not come out of the general fund and that OIPI agree to participate.
Lora Slawitschka, president of the OIPI board, confirmed the board has agreed to mediation. However, she said whether the board will contribute to the fee “remains to be seen.”
At the Jan. 2 council meeting, Mayor Pam Larson suggested funds for a mediator may be available from Department of Local Affairs and from fees donated by the commercial climbing community to the city for support of the Ice Park.
Sickles said on Wednesday, “No DOLA funds are expected at this time.”
