Voters approve tax increases for courthouse, school

On Tuesday voters approved a sales tax increase to fund courthouse renovations and a mill levy override to give Ouray School’s budget some relief. Makeup of the Ouray City Council will not change after the Nov. 7 coordinated election. The Ouray School board of directors will have two new members, and two incumbents won reelection.
Total ballots cast in the county were 2,093, out of 4,439 registered voters. Only voters in the City of Ouray voted in the council election, and only voters in Ouray School District voted on the mill levy override and board of directors election.

Courthouse renovation
By a vote of 1224 to 852, county sales tax was increased by 0.55 percent to fund an approximate $8 million courthouse renovation project. The increase will sunset in 20 years.
