Thomas Joseph Trehal

Tom Trehal, 65, of Ridgway, CO passed away peace- fully in his him home on the morning of December 7, 2015 after a long struggle with COPD.
Tom was born in Denver, CO on December 26th, 1949 to Jack and Shirley Trehal. Raised in the small town of Sedalia, CO, he grew up on horseback playing polo, hunt- ing with the hounds, even working as a vet assistant on and off the race tracks. After graduating high school, Tom packed his things and moved to Alaska where he attended college. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army where he served as a medic in Germany during the Vietnam War. Upon return, he moved to the Western Slope where he continued his education at Western State College in Gunnison before relocating to Ridgway. On July 12th, 1992 Tom married Marjane, and they lived happily together for 23 years.
As a long term resident of Ouray County, Tom was a “jack of all trades” working as an equipment operator, mechanic, craftsman, and cattle rancher to name a few. He was a “meat and potatoes” man, and blue jeans and flannel shirts were his staple. He had a lifelong passion for horses and especially enjoyed riding in the San Juan Mountains on cattle drives or simply for pleasure. However, his daughters, Katy and Amy, brought him the most joy. He taught them how to swing a hammer and work on cars; he showed them the benefits of working hard and striving to accomplish their dreams; he passed on to them his vast knowledge and love for horses. He was the most involved, loving, and understanding father that his two girls could have ever asked for.
Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Trehal and his brother, J.D. Trehal. He is survived by his loving wife Marjane Trehal of Colona, who stood by him through thick and thin taking care of him until the end; father, Jack Trehal of Sedalia; sister, Ruby Lynett of Denver; daughter, Katy Trehal Ferguson of Ridgway; daughter, Amy Barger of Colorado Springs; three grand- sons, Cayden Ferguson, Elias Barger, and Killian Barger; his ex-wife and mother to his daughters, Daryl Trehal of Ridgway; as well numerous other relatives and close friends.
An informal celebration of Tom’s life is being arranged by the family. For more information on the date and time please contact Katy at
