Dark clouds rolling over the mountains and bringing intermittent showers and thunder have become routine in Ouray County in the past week, early signs of the summer monsoon season. 

Dennis Phillips, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, explained the "Southwest Monsoon" is a regular weather phenomenon, bringing afternoon showers to the Four Corners region and inter-mountain West from mid-July until as late as September.
