WESTERN SLOPE: Brown to oppose McLachlan in upcoming election

By Sheridan Block

In a unanimous decision the District Assembly nominated J Paul Brown as the Republican candidate for the upcoming election for state representative in House District 59.

Delegates from the district’s six counties — Ouray, Gunnison, San Juan, Hinsdale, La Plata and Archuleta — attended the assembly in Durango on Saturday, April 5. Among them was Ouray County Republican Party chairperson Susan Watson, who was thrilled to have Brown back in the race.
“He served us well the first time through, so I find him an attractive candidate for Western Slope values,” she said.
Nominated by 22-year-old Luke Kirk with a second by Sen. Ellen Roberts and his wife Debbie Brown, the former state representative accepted the nomination, telling supporters that “it would be easier to stay home, but I cannot let the sacrifices of our Founding Fathers slip through our hands.”
“I will use your tax dollars in a good way,” he said. “I’ll tackle the big issues.”
In an interview with the Plaindealer on Tuesday, Brown said that he feels the current legislature is “not prioritizing on some very important issues.” He vowed that, if elected, he will focus his efforts on key issues such as education, highways and roads, and water rights.
