After placing first at the district meet in Mancos on Oct. 26, the Ridgway high school volleyball team will host second-ranked Meeker and third-ranked Telluride for the regional competition on Saturday, Nov. 2 in the Ridgway gymnasium.
Ridgway's first match is against Telluride at 9:00 a.m. and a match with Meeker will follow.
This is the first time the Ridgway volleyball squad has made it to the regional level in over 10 years.
Team captains, senior right-side hitter Grace Benasutti and senior libero Leta McNatt, described how the team made it to first place at the district meet, beating Mancos in four games and Telluride in four until finally topping Nucla in three games during the championship match.
"At the beginning of the third game, we knew we had them (Nucla). It was really exciting," remarked Benasutti.
McNatt described the team as "loud and rowdy," and both athletes expressed hope that a large showing of Ridgway fans would support them at the regional finals.
Benasutti said, "it all kind of started when we beat Norwood, which hasn't been done in 10 years, then our season really took off."
The captains said the team hopes to make it to the state competition, held in two weeks.
Coach Tracy Hill commented that she would be happy to discuss the season after the team made it to state.
"We're definitely never going to forget our senior year," commented Benasutti.
