This coming weekend brings another fun filled festival rooted in frozen H2O. Whether or not there will be any actual ice for the Flat Ice Festival (climbing gear not required) on Saturday is a topic coolly debated. Regardless of ice conditions, we are assured the show will go on. “Ice or no ice, we’re having a party,“ said Richard Kersen, city council liaison to the Parks and Recreation committee.
The annual festival will be held at the Rotary Rink north of Ouray on Saturday from “noon till duskish." Typically, this event boasts fun filled ice rink activities for the whole family; however, potential warm weather may keep the party off the ice. Alternative activities include frisbee golf, soccer and "mud-broomball." Plenty of food and beverages will be provided by local businesses and PARC members. Proceeds from all food and beverage sales will be used to support fundraising for park operations and expansion efforts. Jeff Reznikoff, a member of PARC, said, "It was a very good turnout last year throughout the day, lots of families and kids. A good crowd also stayed into the night for the bonfire." The Ouray Parks and Recreation Committee is hoping for an even bigger turnout this year and encourages all Ouray County residents to come support their parks and celebrate the community.
Normally everyone would be encouraged to dress warmly for the occasion, but who knows what Saturday’s weather will bring. Besides, there will be a big bonfire to keep everyone warm. Not to worry, members of the Ouray Fire Department will be close by in case anything should go awry with the bonfire.
