McLachlan is 66 years old and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. After earning a B.A. in political science in 1970 from Southern Colorado State University and a J. D. in 1973 from the University of Arizona College of Law, he clerked for Colorado Supreme Court Justice Edward Day. He held the positions of La Plata County Prosecutor (1974-1976), La Plata County Attorney (1995-1998) and Colorado Solicitor General (1999 – 2000).
J Paul Brown is 59 years old and was the District 59 incumbent candidate, having served one term. After graduating in 1975 from Mexico State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science he married his sweetheart Debbie. Brown has been a rancher all of his life.
He has served on Board of Directors for: Colorado Farm Bureau; Colorado Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company; Centennial Investment Company; Club 20; La Plata County Planning Commission; San Juan Basin Health Board; Colorado Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company
